These Underlying Patterns

"So aesthetics is the appreciation of these harmonious patterned developments in matter, whether natural or man-made. In the garden we can see the natural unfolding of plants according to their genetic patterns. The way leaves are attached to stems at certain angles. The characteristic silhouettes of different trees. The rigidity or grace of certain flowers’ postures. The way herbs flower at the tip of each stem. Artists understand these patterns and use them to create art that resonates in us because of the new manifestations and expressions of these underlying patterns that our patterned perception recognizes.

Look at colors, complementary blue and orange, red and green, yellow and purple. Listen to the notes in harmonious and discordant chords and in certain keys. Notice the rhythm and tempo in the spoken word and in poetry. Google The Golden Rectangle, the Fibonacci Series, and the Feigenbaum Constant, and marvel how human beings have been able to describe accurately how those patterns function in nature, and how to use those patterns to create extraordinary forms and objects from those patterns and the miracle of fractals."
